Swimming the Channel again

News from the Worthian Network

Sam Steers C'14 will be swimming the English Channel later this month for a worthy cause – inspired by doing the same when he was at Worth.

It used to be a tradition for Worth Sixth Form students to organise an annual Channel swim for charity, and over the years students raised more than £70,000 for a variety of organisations.

Sam was part of the 2013 Worth team that successfully completed the challenge and now he's about to attempt it again to raise money for Barts Charity, the hospital that saved his mother’s life back in 2016.

He says: “I finished at Worth in 2014 and since then I’ve lived in Australia, studied Politics & Economics at the University of Liverpool, worked in London for a year and now I live and work in Belfast where I’ve recently got engaged. My reasons for wanting to attempt to swim the Channel are numerous but it has been a dream that has grown since completing the Channel swim relay I participated in when I was in the lower sixth at Worth. I did this relay along with fellow Worth students including Hugh Murphy, David Corr and Ashley Thomas.

“Training for this swim has been a long and hard process, the hardest thing so far has been completing the qualifier, which consisted of a six-hour swim in the 14 degree Irish sea; ironically I got sunburnt. I’m doing this swim to raise money for Barts Health NHS Trust and more specifically the cardiac fund which kindly took care of my mother in 2016. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.”
