Honoured by the Prime Minister

Ben Wintour B'09 was at 10 Downing Street last week to receive a very special honour for his work with Steel Warriors, the charity he founded in 2017. Initiated by the Prime Minister, the Point of Light Awards highlight the efforts of inspirational people whose service makes a significant impact on society, celebrating their contributions in areas ranging from charity work to innovative community projects.

Steel Warriors melt down knives confiscated by the Police and recycle them into outdoor community gyms. They now have four locations in parks across London - in Tower Hamlets, Lambeth and Haringey - and are planning to build a UK-wide network.

In a personal letter to Ben, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wrote: “Your vision for Steel Warriors is creative, powerful, and making a huge difference to some of the most disadvantaged communities in the country. You are helping take knives off the street. You are giving thousands the chance to lead stronger, healthier lives. And you are helping vulnerable, at-risk young people to build self-confidence and realise their potential.”

Ben tells us, "I was very lucky to be invited to a reception at Downing Street to celebrate St George's Day. It was a great afternoon and an opportunity to meet others from the world of social entrepreneurship, along with a number of different ministers, including Esther McVey MP."

Ben is now also launching a new start-up called Integrate, an agency that helps commercial property owners boost their social impact by optimising vacant space. We wish him well with yet another wonderful project for social good.

Ben encourages young Worthians to get involved in community projects and adds,"Often, it's bright, untrained minds that solve the most complicated problems”.
