Rt. Rev. Dom Stephen Ortiger RIP
Rt. Rev. Dom Stephen Ortiger RIP

The Abbot and Community are sad to inform you that Fr Stephen Ortiger died peacefully among his monastic brethren after a short illness on Saturday 27th January 2024. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer only two weeks before, and the disease advanced very quickly. During his final days, Fr Stephen was generously supported by the prayers and goodwill of his many friends and those among whom he ministered. The Abbot and Community of Worth thank all those who have written to Fr Stephen, prayed for him, and carried his wellbeing in their hearts in so many ways. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Worth Prep School 1947-1953, Downside (Smythe) 1953-1957, Housemaster St Bede's, Head Master of Worth School 1983-1994, Abbot of Worth 1994-2002, Chaplain of St Mary's House 2008-2016. A true Worthian. Known and loved by thousands.

The Funeral Mass for Fr Stephen Ortiger took place at Worth Abbey on Saturday 17th February with over 1,000 people attending, many of whom were former pupils - some photographs are included at the bottom of this page. To access a copy of the Order of Service, the livestream recording and the text of Abbot Mark Barrett's homily, please click here.

The Fr Stephen Ortiger Bursary Fund will not only honour Fr Stephen's memory but provide financial support for those who would otherwise have found a visit to the Worth Abbey Retreat Centre unaffordable.
