Fr Stephen Ortiger's biography of Abbot Farwell published

'An Unlikely Cornerstone' tells the story of the first Abbot of Worth

The Monastic Commnity at Worth are delighted to announce the publication of An Unlikely Cornerstone The Life & Times of Dom Victor Farwell, a biography about the first Abbot of Worth and a pivotal figure in the history of Worth Abbey, written by Fr Stephen Ortiger OSB prior to his death last year.

Abbot Victor led Worth for over 31 years - first as Conventual Prior from 1957, and then as the Abbey’s first Abbot from 1965 to 1988. He guided the community through the transformative years of the Second Vatican Council and oversaw the construction of the Abbey Church, now recognised as a landmark of modern ecclesiastical architecture in its 50th anniversary year.

With clarity and insight, Fr Stephen tells the story of a man whose vision, prayerful leadership, and quiet strength helped shape the spiritual and pastoral identity of Worth Abbey. Fr Stephen wrote, “From the roots of his being, Victor believed that prayer was the secret of success.” This book is a moving tribute to a foundational figure in Worth’s history and a valuable addition to any reader interested in monastic life, leadership, and the enduring power of faith. Fr Stephen's knowledge of Worth’s history and his personal connection to Abbot Victor make this biography both authoritative and compelling.

The book will be available to buy in person from the Worth Abbey Book Shop from 10th July, priced at £10.
