It is with great sadness that we report the death of one of our Founder Pupils, Sir Peter Jonas G'64, who passed away in Munich on 22nd April 2020, aged 73, after a long battle with cancer.

Sir Peter  was a huge name in the classical music and opera worlds having started his career as assistant to Sir George Solti at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and then going on to become Head of the English National Opera, from 1985 to 1993, and then the Bavarian State Opera until his retirement in 2007.

Sir Peter had his first bout with cancer at 25 and struggled with it throughout his life. It gave him a sense of proportion and gratitude that endeared him to everyone. He was also a much loved member of our Community and will be hugely missed. We send our condolences and prayers to his wife Barbara.

May he rest in peace.

There have been numerous tributes to Sir Peter from Germany and the UK. Here is an obituary written in The Guardian.
